Molten glass is an amazing material to work with. It has a life of it's own, and if you know what to look for, it suggests ways of making and knowing that would never occur using paper and computer design programmes alone. My designs are always informed by an intimate knowledge of the material and unconventional processes which result in the unique forms you can see on this site.
In music, it’s the silences and spaces that are left that stimulate emotion. I am intrigued and inspired by the notion of leaving space around an obvious display of practical skill in order to produce harmonious designs. The ability to ‘by-pass’ my skills is important, but it is essential that we possess advanced practical skills in the first place. Making ‘rough’ art objects is of no value if the maker is working to the best of his or her abilities. What makes the best work successful is the ‘tacit’ skill and knowledge within them.
I tell people that I am inspired by a particularly large gas bill, but in fact it is the order and logic found in nature that really captures my imagination.
